Anti-Qld gas exploration demo planned

Sydney Morning Herald, 25.11.2010

Queensland farmers and conservationists will fire their first salvo on Friday in a campaign to lock out gas explorers with a demonstration at a company’s Brisbane headquarters.

A demonstration is also planned at a rural residential estate at Tara, 300km west of Brisbane.

Friends of the Earth campaigner Drew Hutton said Tara residents were determined to stop QGC entering the estate.

“This is the opening salvo in the Lock the Gate campaign,” Mr Hutton said.

“The Western Downs Alliance, based in the Tara-Kogan-Chinchilla area, have told QGC they will not allow them into their community. They have blockaded the company once before and will do it again.”

Hundreds of farmers in Queensland’s southwest officially launched the campaign this week, determined to protect agricultural and other land from perceived mining threats.
