The Beverley mine is controversial because the proponents of the mine, American owned Heathgate resources, will not be required to rehabilitate the polluted Beverley aquifer once mining is completed. But rehabilitation would be required if the Company was mining in the US.

The long term sustainability of the Great Artesian Basin and its ability to provide water to future mining and pastoral developments, urban and rural communities, and the environment will be the focus of a $17 million research project
