I agree with Dr. Sheridan and as the Immediate SA Vice President of the Murray Darling Association i have for a number of years been seeking my association to research the conuctivity between the MDB and the GAB. We MUST protect our countries ground water at all costs it may be our last line of defence down the track. It’s about Austral;ia’s future!

The Great Artesian Basin is essentially a non-renewable resource that sould be used sparingly as a source of potable water and for agricultural production. It is far too valuable a resource to be fritted away, or polluted, by short lived extractive industries such as coal seam gas mining. The water of the Great Artesian Basin will be needed by future generations. To waste it for short term gain would be a criminal act that must not be permitted by the government.

There is a fierce debate about the amount of water the coal seam gas industry will extract from underground, and what impact it may have on the sustainability of the Great Artesian Basin.
The industry suggests it will pull out somewhere between 126 gigalitres and 280 gigalitres a year, while the National Water Commission puts the figure above 300 gigalitres a year. Others, including the Water Group advising the Federal Government, suggest it is higher still.
This amount of water, taken from an already stressed GAB, cannot be allowed.

And this is the same leak that Santos denied 10 days ago. First they blamed farmers’ chemicals for the trees dying. Then they said there had been a lot of rain lately – and that “eucalypts react with water”!! The masters of ‘spin’.

What?? “POTENTIAL for prosecution”???? If the govt. doesn’t charge ESG over this incident, then they will have to admit that all their chorus about “strict regulations” are a complete sham. And that the gas companies rule the roost.

Why on earth aren’t they harnessing and using this methane (that is polluting the atmosphere) instead of destroying our GAB to get coal bed methane out??? This Arctic methane is apparently destroying the planet, so why not USE IT!! and leave our coal beds (and GAB) alone?? It says the shelf is ‘shallow – 50 metres or less in depth’ – so it should be easy to extract it before it pollutes the atmosphere. Or is it just that its cheaper for them to destroy our land and our aquifers, by extracting coal bed methane, rather get tankers out to the Arctic?

an horrific water table pollution documentary shown by sbs about a U.S case has never resurfaced.It was evidence enough to have the australian version stopped in the interest
of future generations who will have no recourse .csg coompanies should have every
possible resistance put in their way.this 80 year old is sad.
